Day 13: 100 miles, 100 smiles

Hey y’all, Raquel here to give you a recap on our very first Century ride! 100 miles!

This morning we woke up at our earliest yet, 4am. We did our usual chores, cleaned up our host site in Palermo, NY, packed up the van, put air in our tires and then hit the open road towards Rochester, NY. For the first 10 miles we were unfortunately hit with rain so we were cold, wet and soggy by the time we made it to lunch around mile 46. My group accidentally took a wrong turn, giving us an extra 5 miles of hills, so lunch for us was much needed by the time we got there. Since today was going to be such a long day we actually had two lunches planned, one at the halfway mark and one around three-quarters the way there. First lunch was set up in a picnic area on Lake Ontario.

After lunch it was a race to get to the host and make the whole 102 miles before 4pm so as to not get swept up by the van. The sun also decided to make its way out mid-afternoon and temps started creeping into the 90’s. No more wet socks at least but it also meant we were trying to beat the heat as well. The last 20ish miles were along the Eerie Canal Heritage Trail which was nice and flat but it sure was hot out.

Our host tonight is the South Wedge Mission in Rochester, NY. Once we arrived we hopped in the van to take some quick showers before heading over to a very special dinner host. One of our fellow co-riders, Kelly, is a Rochester native and her family graciously hosted all of us at their house for some barbecue and bon fire.

Overall feeling super accomplished of myself and our whole group for getting through our longest ride yet and in the slew of different weather conditions we had today. We all are going to sleep well tonight.

Until next time.

Raquel
