Day 52: Sweating at Salem Sue

nus2022

The ride into Richardton was another day that I was glad to be in the truck! Temperatures reached the mid-90s as the team rode over some dusty, rocky gravel. Lunch truck made a stop at Salem Sue, the World's Largest Holstein Cow, up on the hill in New Salem, North Dakota. The road up was treacherous. We decided to have lunch at the bottom of the hill and met the riders with a freshly chopped watermelon. Groups rolled through to the quaint bank parking lot to the bumping tunes of Missy Elliot.

The heat required a second lunch and safety nav Masha greeted riders with spritzes of water from her bike bottle. Everyone huddled by the side of the truck for small scraps of shade. We cut up a second watermelon.

In Richardton, we stayed at the local high school in the music and art rooms. We went to Richardton's number one attraction, the local abbey, where Catholic Monks study, pray, and sell, but don't make, wine. We bought a bottle or two and enjoyed the view over the hill. We cooked our own dinners, a rare occurrence that felt joyful. Sweep challenge of the day was to emulate boy bands, so we laughed at the music video submissions as they rolled in.
